SharePoint 2010 For Students – Baby Steps (5)

Is it MOSS, WSS, SharePoint Server or Foundation ?!

Many names come up when reading about SharePoint in general, which makes some confused about the names. this post’s goal is to distinguish the meaning of every one of them and knowing when to use each one:

MOSS: stands for “Microsoft Office SharePoint Server” ; which means SharePoint server 2007

WSS: Windows SharePoint Services; which means the Free – not all features included – Edition of SharePoint 2007

SharePoint Foundation: the free Edition of SharePoint 2010 (not all features included like Publishing sites)

SharePoint Server: is SharePoint Server 2010.

So, SharePoint server is the 2010 edition of MOSS and SharePoint Foundation is the 2010 edition of WSS.

Don’t make a mistake of calling wrong name when you go for a job interview Smile

Hope that helped.
